The Hatherop Estate in Gloucestershire became part of the Ernest Cook Trust land-holding in 2002. The Estate, which extends to some 3,800 acres, lies immediately to the north of the Fairford Estate. It consists of five main farms, and numerous houses and cottages in the villages of Eastleach and Hatherop. The farms carry a mixture of arable and stock enterprises and there is a strong commitment to organic farming and to the Countryside Stewardship Scheme.

The valley of the River Leach, which flows through the heart of the estate, is one of the most beautiful and unspoilt areas in the whole of Gloucestershire.

The Hatherop Estate was in the ownership of the Bazley family for over one hundred years. Following the death of Sir Thomas Bazley Bt. his children decided to sell the estate: they noted that “One of the main factors in our decision to sell to the Ernest Cook Trust, has been our wish to preserve the Estate for future generations. We feel that selling the Estate to
the Ernest Cook Trust is the best way to maintain its special character as well as retaining the unspoilt nature of the villages of Eastleach and Hatherop, which our father valued so much.” The Trust’s ethos has much in common with the Bazley family, and the Trustees will continue to care for the inhabitants and fabric of this latest addition to their family of estates.
