One of the many methods of farming found on the Trust farms is organic farming. Organic farmers understand the connections and relationships between the soil, organic matter, insects, plants, animals and humans.

Nothing on the farm can be changed without affecting the other things. The aim is to work with natural processes to grow crops and livestock, and to protect them from pests and diseases using methods which nature itself has provided.

Hence, because they are unnatural, genetically modified crops are not used on organic farms.

The organic farmer uses natural fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides, instead of the artificially manufactured alternatives. He also studies the timing of his cultivations and other operations carefully, so that intervention with chemicals is not necessary. Organic livestock farmers also look after the welfare of their animals to a very high standard. The Organic Symbol Scheme, developed by the Soil Association, allows farmers to label their organic products. This gives the shopper the choice of whether or not to support organic farming. It is the most sustainable farming system, leaving our environment in the best possible condition for our children. If we do not buy organic foods, organic farmers canot continue to farm in such a beneficial way.
Nobody knows for certain whether the long-term use of chemicals and genetically modified organisms in agriculture will be harmful to humans or to the environment, or whether it will be absolutely safe. However, organic farmers say that the only sure way to avoid possible problems is to avoid the use of these things.
